Everyone that knows me, knows I adore my little 7-year-old and 11-year-old cousins. They’re like the niece and nephew I never had. They’re always doing something to make
me laugh, spend money, or inspire me. A few days ago, I decided to take them to the park.  I wanted to run/walk on the track, and I figured it would give them some time to play off a little energy. Before we went, we all decided we would do a few laps together. Dre, the 11-year-old said he would run 3 laps without stopping, and Meia, the 7-year-old said she would do two. Keep in mind, neither one of them knew how long the track was, they just wanted to go and be outside.

When we got there Dre put on his headphones and took off running. Meia and I were behind him, with a brisk walk.  I somehow convinced Meia to start jogging. I will tell you now, Meia is not one who likes to run especially on a track. She got tired and said “Licia can we take a break”. I told her “We’re almost finished, let’s finish strong”. Needless to say, she finished the part I convinced her to run, but afterward, she looked at me and said in the nicest way possible “Licia, I’m tired, I don’t think I signed up for this. Can I please go play”? I told her she could.

Let’s get back to Dre, he was still in the lead holding a nice pace. He was determined and committed. Now, that’s two words that I like. By now you’ve guessed it, he definitely finished what he started, just like he said he would. After finishing his laps, he came back to meet me. He took off his headphones and said, “Licia, I didn’t realize how long this track was going be, it’s not like the one at our school, but, I told you, “I GOT THIS”.  Those words are becoming three of my favorite words, and I hope they become yours.

In life, we sometimes want good things to happen to us instantly. We don’t realize we have to pace ourselves while we’re on this journey called “LIFE”. My 11-year-old cousin was on a mission, he didn’t know exactly what he was getting himself into, but he knew he wasn’t going to stop until his mission was completed. I can imagine him saying over and over in his head, “I Got This”. I hope those three big words serve as a reminder, that no what life throws at you, today, tomorrow or in the future; continue to pace yourself, know that you will achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve as long as you keep pushing. When you start feeling like the world is caving in on you, say it out loud “I GOT THIS”.
